Dr. Vincenzo Giordano began his medical journey in 2011, starting at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. His role involved engaging in complex adult cardiothoracic surgeries, where he quickly became a proficient practitioner. His dedication to advancing his expertise in critical care was marked by his acquisition of an FCCS certification, equipping him to manage critically ill patients better.

In 2012, he transitioned to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, taking on the role of Specialty Doctor in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. During his three-year tenure, he excelled in surgical decision-making during elective and emergency procedures, contributing significantly to patient care. He actively participated in mortality and morbidity briefings and regularly attended multidisciplinary and cardiothoracic meetings. During this period, he also honed his skills in mentoring and training, further deepening his research interests in cardiac and aortic surgeries.

Position as Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon

Advancing to the position of Locum Consultant in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Royal Infirmary in October 2015, Dr. Giordano began performing various cardiac procedures independently. His expertise covers minimally invasive surgeries and more complex cardiac procedures. By 2017, he had secured a substantive consultant post and had performed over 1900 cardiac and aortic surgeries, averaging over 200 cases annually. His areas of surgical expertise are diverse, including total arterial myocardial revascularization, off-pump surgical revascularization, and a variety of complex aortic surgeries.

He also plays a pivotal role in Scotland's Scottish National Thoraco-Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Complex Aortic Service, which aims to provide comprehensive care for patients with severe aortic conditions.

In 2020, Dr. Vincenzo pioneered the port-access approach through a mini right anterior thoracotomy for aortic valve replacement, marking a first in Scotland. His active involvement in the national TAVI program and his leadership of the Quality Improvement Program in his department further highlight his commitment to advancing cardiovascular treatments and improving patient outcomes.

Additional Professional Milestones and Accomplishments

Following an eight-month fellowship in Aortic Surgery at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital in 2018, Dr. Giordano introduced the Frozen Elephant Trunk technique for treating thoracic aortic disease in Scotland. He has successfully performed over 70 such procedures, helping to establish the Royal Infirmary as a leading center for complex aortic surgery in the UK.

His ongoing clinical research focuses on enhancing aortic surgery outcomes and pioneering innovative surgical techniques. He is a respected reviewer for prestigious medical journals and dedicates considerable effort to training the next generation of surgeons through workshops and conferences. His upcoming proctorship with Terumo Aortic, beginning in April 2025, is expected to further his contributions to the field.
